NJ MADISON — Madison preservationists shape Waverly Place infrastructure redesign. The Historic Preservation Commission, meeting March 10, offered recommendations for the street and utility project affecting the downtown historic district, with Dr. Jill Rhodes, Chair, Max Hart, Vice Chair, and Chris Kellogg, Co-Vice Chair, representing the board at a March 2nd stakeholders meeting.
The commission supported interpretive granite bands highlighting historic events and opposed tree grates that have heaved and caused tripping hazards, but urged caution on allowing public art on the NJ Transit overpass due to concerns about setting a problematic precedent. In a separate compliance matter, commission member John Solu reported that Forum Coffee's current blue facade violates historic district standards, and Dr. Rhodes committed to contacting the Borough Administrator to establish a formal facade-change application process currently missing from borough procedure.
